STATEMENT
Many have challenged received absolutes of authorship, originality, and stable meanings.  I am interested in examining some of these same ideas, not to knock them off pedestals they no longer occupy but to discover resonances among the variable terms of a basic visual and aesthetic “literacy,” for want of a better term.  My work plays with questions of how represented codes --- such as Braille, gestural mark, Morse code, or a simple dot — might be read and received. I am also interested in how authenticity meets rhetorical trope.  I think most artists working today deal with this issue at some level, often with some anxiety, which I share to a degree.  But it is important to me that my drawings also be seductive and that pleasure not be excluded from the challenge of criticality, even granting that beauty has its codes.
My process begins with the construction of a reproducible matrix, usually a relief or a stencil, from which I make rubbings in graphite and pastel.
