
SCHOLARSHIPS
Numerous scholarships are awarded to students through the School of Visual Arts as well as through the College of Arts & Architecture. Most scholarships are applied for during the Spring semester, but some are also awarded to incoming students based on their portfolio.
MARGARET GIFFEN SCHOENFELDER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Presented in memory of Margaret Giffen Shoenfelder, a graduate of architecture
at Penn State and a water-colorist throughout her life.
Eligibility: Given to a student entering his or her senior year
Requirement: Given to an exceptional student studying painting
Award: Two $750 awards per year
BRUCE SHOBAKEN UNDERGRADUATE HONORARY ENDOWED AWARD IN PRINTMAKING
Presented in honor of Professsor Emeritus Bruce Shobaken for his dedicated
service to the University as an outstanding instructor.
Eligibility: Student in printmaking
Requirements: Demonstrated excellence in the area of printmaking
Award: $300 — the award must be used for the purchase of materials
WILLIAM J. AND LOIS KESTERSON LEIGHT SCHOLARSHIP
Given in memory of Lois Kesterson Leight by her husband, William J. Leight.
Eligibility: Undergraduate art major
Requirement: Demonstrated artistic ability as an art major
Deadline: Even-numbered years during the spring
Award: Approximately $1,900 given every other year — not a continuing
scholarship
SIMEON AND ELIZABETH GALLU SCHOLARSHIP
Simeon Gallu established this scholarship in memory of his parents, Simeon
and Elizabeth Sallu. Sam Gallu was a graduate of Penn State who became a
writer and producer for television, radio and a playwright whose credits
included Give ‘Em Hell Harry.
Eligibility & Requirement: Incoming freshman possessing outstanding
and exceptional talent, dedication to his or her goal of a painting or sculpture
career, and display total dedication to this goal
Deadline: Awarded during spring semester to apply to first fall and spring
semesters
Award: Approximately $1,500 per academic year
EDWIN ZOLLER SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded in memory of Edwin Zoller, professor emeritus of art.
Eligibility: An outstanding student
Requirement: The student must have a concentration in painting
Award: Approximately $300
LESLIE P. GREENHILL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD
Given in memory of the late Leslie Greenhill, retired senior professor of
education at Penn State.
Eligibility: Consideration for this award shall be given to all students
with junior standing enrolled in intermediate or advanced photography courses
that have exhibited a serious involvement in and commitment to photography.
Deadline: Spring
Requirement: A portfolio of at lease twenty prints, a transcript, and a
description of related activities are required for consideration
Award: $1,000
BRIAN BETZLER MEMORIAL AWARD
Presented in memory of Brian Betzler by Betzler family.
Eligibility: Full-time junior or senior student enrolled in the School of
Visual Arts
Requirement: Students who have exhibited exemplary artistic achievement
Award: Projected award amount $500
GRAHAM-RATH SCHOLARSHIP
Presented in memory of Margaret Graham Rath, M.F.A. ’42 and her husband,
Charles J. Rath, Jr.
Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate student enrolled or planning to enroll
in a B.F.A. program in the School of Visual Arts
Requirement: Given to a student who has achieved superior academic records
and has manifested promise of outstanding academic success
Award: Projected award amount $1,200
ALICE SCHWARTZ MATTIL AWARD IN ART EDUCATION
Eligibility & Requirement: Selected by the Art Education faculty, the
awards are given to full-time junior and senior students enrolled in the
Art Education program whose career goal is teaching
Deadline: Awarded at the Spring Convocation Ceremony
Award: Two awards per year: one to a student with a junior standing and
one to a student with a senior standing — approximately $250 each.
Each award shall be for one academic year and may not be renewed.
KARA D. BERGGMAN AWARD
Purpose: To honor and recognize the most outstanding piece of artwork in
the undergraduate student art exhibition at The Pennsylvania State University.
Eligibility: Selected by the Director of the School of Visual Arts upon
recommendation of the juror of the undergraduate student art exhibition
at The Pennsylvania.
Award: Number of awards and amount of each is determined by the Director
of the School of Visual Arts
BARBARA J. GOHN SCHOLARSHIP IN THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND ARCHITECTURE
Purpose: Presented to provide recognition and financial assistance to an
outstanding student enrolled in the School of Visual Arts.
Eligibility: Full-time junior and senior ranking students enrolled in the
School of Visual Arts.
Award: Projected award amount of $1,250.
DOROTHY HUGHES YOUNG ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FOR MUSIC EDUCATION AND ART EDUCATION.
Purpose: Presented to provide recognition and financial assistance for students
pursuing studies in cultural and ethnic diversity in the arts and significant
artistic endeavors in a foreign country (i.e. seminars, performances, summer
study programs, semester abroad, etc.).
Eligibility: Consideration for this scholarship shall be given to all full-time
students who have reached the junior, senior or graduate-student level and
are currently enrolled in Art Education with plans for a career in teaching..
Award: Projected award amount of $2,000.
JOSEPHINE PAUL MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP
Purpose: Presented in memory of Hobson Pittman
Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled or planning to
enroll in the College of Arts and Architecture.
Award: Projected award amount of $1,000.
WILLIAM E. AND JULIA NELO CLARK EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP
Purpose: Presented to provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding
students enrolled or planning to enroll in the College of Arts and Architecture
Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate students who have achieved superior
academic records or who manifest promise of outstanding academic success.
Award: Projected award amount of $ 675.
