An internship can be a crucial component of your educational experience. It provides the opportunity for a first-hand experience in a potential career path and helps you to make well-informed decisions about your professional future.
The process of securing an internship mirrors the process of finding employment in your field: networking with professionals, reviewing posted opportunities through professional publications, and contacting specific organizations to inquire about positions.
The following organizations produce publications and websites that list internship and employment opportunities related to the visual arts:
American Craft Council (ACC)
Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC)
American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA)
College Art Association (CAA)
International Sculpture Center (ISC)
National Art Education Association (NAEA)
National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP)
National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA)
Society of American Graphic Artists
Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG)
Special Interest Group: Computer Graphics (SIGGRAPH)
Many of these organizations have regional or local chapters and are an excellent way to gain access to a community of your peers. These chapters usually hold meetings, sponsor events, competitions, and exhibitions, and provide various opportunities for networking.
Students may earn credits for an internship. A faculty member must agree to serve as a sponsor, assign the appropriate number of credits, and provide a grade. An internship form is available in 210 Patterson Building.
